Ever since Credit 911 confirmed that we could settle unsubsidized student loans, we have spent quite a bit of time explaining what the difference between the two types of loans are.

In short, subsidized student loans are when the Federal Government paid the interest on those loans while the individual was attending school. The Federal Perkins Loans are an example of a subsidized student loan. The interest rate is locked at 5% and the Federal Government pays the interest while the student attends school, there is a 9 month grace period following graduation, and an additional grace period during deferments.

Perkins loans, however, are limited in dollars to those students who show the greatest need.

Most students then turn to the Stafford Loan program for additional funding, these loans fall into our two famous categories Subsidized and Unsubsidized. Again, the subsidized Stafford Loan is based on need, while the unsubsidized Stafford Loan is not.

Most Stafford Loans interest rates range from 4% to 6% depending on what year the student took out the loan. As an example loans taken in 2009/2010 were fixed at 5.6 percent while loans this year are expected to be 4.5%. For the subsidized Stafford the government pays all that interest during your education plus the 9 months discussed above. Additionally, students receiving subsidized loans must be minimally enrolled as a half time college student to remain eligible for the funding.

Those that did not qualify for subsidized loans AND those that needed more money would move on to unsubsidized Stafford Loans. Neither subsidized nor unsubsidized loans obtained through financial aid require a credit check, no collateral was needed, what was most important is that you were somehow able to fill out the very complicated Free Application for Federal Student Aid, more commonly referred to as the FAFSA.

The FAFSA is know for being long and complicated, but the good news is that if you happened to fill this out and you werent in terrible financial shape at the time you probably have a mix of subsidized and unsubsidized loans or all of your loans are unsubsidized.

Too Many Universities All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go

The Coalition Government which has placed so much emphasis on reversing the trend towards dumbing down in education must be extremely dismayed by one side-effect of tuition fees in higher education rising to as much as 9,000 a year. It appears that the drop in university course applications which has followed the fee rise has prompted many institutions to lower their entry requirements in order to keep their numbers up. This is especially true of newer universities and former polytechnics.

According to the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS), the number of English applicants to all universities has fallen by 10 % compared with last year. The biggest casualty was the University for the Creative Arts which suffered a massive 29.2% drop from 2011. At the top end of the spectrum, Oxbridge applications were virtually unchanged.

In what looks like a desperate last minute attempt to keep student numbers and revenues up, many institutions have lowered A level grade requirements which basically means that young people are being let in even though they may not have what it takes to ultimately gain a degree. Either that or the quality of degrees would have to fall. This is almost certainly not what the government intended when it moved the goalposts on fees.

Take, for example, the situation at Leeds Metropolitan University where the Telegraph reports entry levels on 97 degree courses, including architecture, law, English literature and history, have been cut to 80 points on the UCAS tariff – the equivalent of only two grade Es, the lowest possible pass. The inevitable result is that the average quality of undergraduates at such universities is destined to decline.

Of course, in the past, such establishments would have responded to such developments by focusing more of their education marketing spend on attracting students from overseas but, here again they have been stymied by the governments tightening up on visa requirements for students from outside of the EU.

That just leaves the EU as a potential source of students to compensate for the shortfall in domestic numbers. This may also prove a problem bearing in mind the economic malaise in the Eurozone and the fact that fees in many EU countries like Belgium are actually lower than in the UK.

Nobody it seems has asked the most relevant question which is what is the optimal number of university places in the UK in the first place. It would appear that the quality of graduates, especially in the disciplines which are in such high demand such as technology and engineering, is now taking centre stage in the debate rather than the total quantity of new undergraduates studying at our universities.

Public School Insurance for Indiana and Student Injuries

It is commonly accepted that school liability has increased over the past several years, and public schools, with their various exposures involving faculty, students, workers and outsiders, must contend with several concerns from multiple scenarios. The list is long; wrongful death, serious injury, sexual harassment, and bullying all present opportunities for large settlements or jury verdicts against these institutions.

However, an analysis of recent decisions in negligence cases brought against schools indicates that the frequency of lawsuits generally has not changed over the past two decades. New Regulations Could Tie Student Loans to Post-Graduation Employment

The U.S. Department of Education is considering a new regulation that would tie a schools ability to offer federal grants and college loans to proof that its alumni can find gainful employment after graduation.

Colleges and universities that cannot demonstrate that their graduates are “gainfully” employable — earning enough after graduation to be able to make the monthly payments on their student loans — would be barred from offering federal financial aid.

Although the proposed regulation — the so-called “gainful employment rule” — would apply to all schools that offer federal financial aid, the rule is aimed specifically at curbing complaints about for-profit colleges that provide occupational education and job training at such high costs that their graduates are often left in financial sinkholes, overburdened with student loan debt and holding degrees that may not translate into anything but minimal-paying jobs.

The Department of Education had planned to release the revised draft wording on the gainful employment rule in November, but wanted to spend additional time reviewing the more than 90,000 public comments made when the rule was first proposed in July. The government hopes to implement the rule by July 1, 2012.

As outlined by the Education Department in the initial draft of the rule, “gainful employment” will be measured in part by the percentage of a schools graduates whose student loans are in default.

The Education Department already currently considers student loan default rates as a condition for allowing institutions to offer federal financial aid, but the new rule would allow the government to evaluate schools program by program, using student loan default rates specific to each degree program offered, rather than the schools overall default rate.

Some critics of the proposed regulation question the merits of using student loan defaults as a measure of gainful employment, as opposed to measuring employment more directly through other means. These critics point out that borrowers may default on their student loans for reasons other than unemployment or low earnings, and some schools worry that theyll be held liable for defaults that are unrelated to employment.

Consumer watchdogs and student advocacy groups, however, maintain that for-profit colleges encourage students to take on more student loan debt than they can reasonably afford, in order to pay the high price tag that for-profit schools slap onto degree programs with limited or low-paying employment prospects.

Further, these groups says for-profit schools may be enrolling students who are not academically qualified for the programs they enter, creating a higher likelihood that those students will drop out of their program, which in turn means a higher likelihood that those student will default on their student loans. (College dropouts, in general, default on their student loans at a higher rate than do those students who complete their degree.)

Homeschooling High School – How Much Is Too Much Writing

One frequent variation on the “how much is too much” question for homeschooling involves high school writing. Specifically, what is a usual, acceptable level of writing to ask your high school students to do?

Most high school student curriculum seem to have one 5-6 page paper assigned one or two times per year, with some smaller papers in between. In public school, students are generally asked to write one or two papers like that per year. I personally asked my children to write 500-1000 words per week when they were in 11th and 12th grade. That was about 1-2 pages typed and single spaced, most weeks of the year. It wasn’t all “English” because at times the papers were for History, French, or Art.

This might look like too much to you, but the reason our writing program was successful was because I taught my kids at their level, and I knew how much to push them so they wouldn’t break. That’s why homeschooling works. If you have them write AT THEIR LEVEL, they can learn. If you have them write too much, then they will get irritated, angry, or worse, rebel. I realize that I had my kids write a lot, and I know it was more than most. That’s what my kids did because they were capable, and both ended up being excellent writers. But the reason it was effective wasn’t because of how much I had them write, it was because I asked them to work at their level.

Trust yourself on that. If you are involved with a writing program, and the requirements are killing you – STOP! You’ll discover that each child in your family could be different, as well. Perhaps if you consider having them write for, say, an hour a day, that would be a more reasonable measure for high school. If you feel that your child is being asked to do too much, then I am 100% confident that it is too much.

Have them write each day, and have them write different things. Good writing is all about practice, which means that they do need to do some writing every day. But don’t push them so hard that they dislike writing. Keep a “five year plan” in mind, where they have a love of learning at the end of this wonderful homeschooling.
